Every holiday destination offers a plethora of things to see and do. From once in a lifetime experience to incredible landmarks to the secret places the locals love. But with so many options of places to see and things to do, it can be difficult to decide, where to go and what to do.
To make your decision easier, we thought that we would tell you about the Reef House in Palm Cove and some of the things you absolutely MUST do when you stay.
The Reef House
Before we dive into the experiences every Reef House visitor should have, we thought we should tell you a little bit about the Reef House.
Along the coast of Tropical North Queensland, about halfway between Cairns and Port Douglas, you will find Palm Cove. Palm Cove is a tropical seaside village that radiates a calming energy that is incredibly hard to replicate. Relaxation washes over you the moment you arrive.
In Palm Cove, you will find the Reef House, which is one of Palm Cove’s longest standing and most well-known destinations. Built back in 1958 by a Cairns Bookmaker, the Reef House began as a family home for the bookmaker and his family. A home with the “best swimming pool in North Queensland”.
In 1970, this family home was purchased by a syndicate group who opened the property as a restaurant with limited accommodation. Then in 1972, Brigadier David Thomson acquired the property and operated it as a private residence, where every visitor was treated a personal guest.
From this time onwards, traditions were created, and the Reef House evolved into a 5-star colonial style beachfront property that welcomes visitors from all over the world to unwind and step in luxurious relaxation.
Not only do the guests at the Reef House have access to the finest accommodation and amenities, but the location provides all visitors the perfect place to base themselves to experience the best of the Reef House, Palm Cove, and the Tropical North Queensland region.

Dine under the Melaleucas at the Reef House Restaurant
Dining in Palm Cove is a real treat, especially for the foodies among us. The local restaurants and cafes take advantage of their tropical location and the local delicacies, creating delicious meals that will satiate even the fussiest of eaters.
While almost any meal in Palm Cove is going to leave you satisfied, a meal under the towering Melaleucas at the Reef House Restaurant is unmissable. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can savour the taste of the local produce prepared in a wide variety of meals.
But it’s not only the delectability of the meals that makes a meal under the Melaleucas unmissable, it’s the also the breathtaking ambiance of the Reef House Restaurant that turns your meal from a delicious meal to a culinary experience.
Discover the tranquillity and intimacy of dining with the stars and Melaleucas above and the gentle rolling waves of the Coral Sea lapping at the shore ahead. One of the best ways to take advantage of this atmosphere is with the six-course degustation menu. A candle lit dinner with paired wines – what more could you want?
Enjoy the Reef House’s traditions with a lazy day by the pool
When you stay at the Reef House you have access to number of amazing facilities on the property, including two delightful swimming pools – an adult only tranquillity pool and a heated mineral pool.
So, what better way to take advantage of these incredible facilities than with a day spent lazing by the pool? As part of the signature guest inclusions and the Reef House’s long-standing traditions, you can enjoy poolside service and sorbet each day.
Cocktails, delicious bites to eat, refreshing cold towels and sorbet every afternoon? We wouldn’t say no. Each day a butler service is available between 11am to 4pm to provide you with poolside service, so you can spend more time relaxing in the tropical sun. Locally made sorbet is served each day at 3pm, and just as day turns into night, another long-standing tradition begins – Punch and canapes!
Finish off your day of relaxation with the nightly cocktail hour that dates back to the 1970s. As the lanterns are lit around the property, guests can enjoy complimentary punch and canapes at the Brigadier’s Lounge. These signature traditions are steeped in history and are some of the things that sets the Reef House apart from other hotels.
